I enjoy shopping online because I’m not a fan of shopping malls (“What? Aren’t you from Los Angeles?” – well, yes, but it’s not all strip malls believe it or not). Shopping online is one of those activities a lot of us do while we’re doing something else; it doesn’t take a huge amount of brainpower, so we can wait for water to boil, or watch television, at the same time. But sometimes it does take brain power to find something new, something we don’t know we want until we see it. That’s why I’m so psyched about Sweet Relish’s brand new “Discover” button. It’s a little like playing a slot machine: You press the button, and three items show up on your screen. Might be food, might be headphones, who knows? It’s fun.
All the brands represented on Sweet Relish are curated by the site, and respected. The page that gives you three thematically connected brands is one way to access Sweet Relish’s Discover Button. You can also see it on the main page, but here you get a shuffle of categories, then a shuffle of brand, resulting in one final product (such as jewelry –> 1:Face Watch –> a blue 1:Face Watch). Because it may be a new brand name to you, you have the option to read reviews about 1:Face Watch or whatever brand comes up via the Discover button) as well. Go ahead, click the “Discover” button on Sweet Relish — what did you get? You’ll be introduced to new brands, hopefully (unless you’re on the cutting edge yourself. Me? Not so much) and learn about the brands right then and there. My cowriter described the Brush On Block sunscreen, for example, and that’s represented via the Discover button on Sweet Relish. And then there’s that aforementioned 1:Face Watch by Mirza Minds. The 1:Face Watch brand’s slogan is “Changing the World, 1 Face at a Time.” There’s a pun in there, but also meaning. Every 1:Face Watch purchase helps provide for one of six different causes. I love this; look good, and do good.
The charities correspond to the color of the watchband; for example, a white 1:Face Watch directly leads to 16 children fed in the Horn of Africa, through 1:Face Watch’s charity One Day Wages. I like this transparency. The American Cancer Society (pink watch), Keep a Child Alive (red watch) and Charity Water (yellow watch) are three other nonprofits that directly benefit from each purchase of a 1:Face Watch.
Lots of us have given a couple of bucks to Live Strong and worn a rubber bracelet for a while. Without getting into the future of Live Strong now that Lance Armstrong has been publicly exposed as a fraud, it’s reassuring to know that all the charities that benefit from purchases of 1:Face Watches are reputable, respected and not celebrity-driven. Not to mention that this isn’t just a thick rubber band, it serves a function as well. I’m getting tired of rooting around for my smartphone just to find out what time it is. My smartphone has subbed in for a watch-with-texting for far too long.
The watches look great — I was treated to a white one, and it fits right in with my Apple products. Minimalist, somewhat futuristic, and slim, 1:Face Watches are also water resistant and sturdy, with a 1-year warranty. They capture that cool quotient that many new brands strive for. Because the 1:Face Watch is tough, I know I can integrate it into my usual set of travel gear. Hiking in unexpected rain showers won’t be a concern….well, not any more of a concern than it usually is for me, anyway!
I’d never have heard of the 1:Face Watch brand if it weren’t for Sweet Relish and the Discover button, and now I wonder what the next highly cool brand I’ll discover will be. One thing I already know is that I’ll be learning about more cool brands, because I’ll be paying repeat visits to the site.
Sweet Relish provided me with a 1:Face Watch for purposes of editorial coverage and compensated The Vacation Gals for a three-month campaign. This is the last of our three posts about Sweet Relish, though we will remain fans of the site.
