Black Tie Ski Rentals in Colorado — and Beyond

My family and I own our ski gear, since we live 30 minutes from Aspen/Snowmass and we road-trip to other ski destinations around the state. But if I were flying into Colorado for a ski trip, I’d absolutely rent gear once I arrived. Between airlines’ hefty baggage fees and not having to lug skis or snowboards and boots around the airport, packing bulky ski gear isn’t appealing.

Thankfully, ski-rental companies abound at ski resorts throughout North America. Here in Colorado, I’m familiar with Black Tie Ski Rentals, which was founded in Steamboat Springs 10 years ago, but now has branches in Aspen, Breckenridge, Vail, Crested Butte, Winter Park and Telluride, as well as Tahoe, Park City, Whistler, Mammoth and Big Sky.

What’s really cool about Black Tie Ski Rentals is that it’s a delivery service. You don’t have to go to a shop location to get fitted or pick up your gear. You order whatever you need online or by phone, and then they come to you! Whether you’re staying at a friend’s home, hotel room or vacation condominium, Black Tie Ski Rentals staff pull up in their black and white vans with skis, snowboards and boots to fit you in the comfort of your mountain lodging.

Staffers bring varying sizes of gear in their vans, just in case what you think you needed when you ordered online or by phone isn’t what you really needed. These guys (and gals) are trained to make sure you get the exact fit and style of gear just for you — whether you’re an expert, intermediate or beginner skier/boarder. Choose from “premium” (top of the line, latest models) gear or “developmental” gear, for children and adults.

Another nice perk when renting from Black Tie Ski Rentals: if you need help with your gear when you’re on the slopes, you just call the local Black Tie ski tech from the mountain and someone will meet you at the base, say, to fix a boot buckle gone awry or to tighten your bindings. Nice customer service!

Pricing for gear varies depending on the time of year you’re renting and branch location. But regular season rates for an adult package start at $32 a day. In addition to boots, skis and poles and snowboards, all branches rent ski helmets. Some locations rent adult-sized and kid-sized ski pants and jackets, too.
