Family Getaway to Dreams Tulum on Mexico’s Riviera Maya

Oftentimes when I’m traveling without my kids, I end up thinking to myself, “Wow! My family would love this…” Such was the case when I stayed at Mexico’s Dreams Tulum a couple years ago. While I was scouting the property with other travel writers to report on its prime location for destination weddings, I couldn’t help but notice all of its incredible services and amenities for kids. This resort in Tulum, on the southern end of the Riviera Maya about 80 miles from Cancun, makes a top-notch luxury vacation for families. With the resort’s “Unlimited-Luxury” offerings, so much is included. Here are just a few highlights:

Explorer's Club is a fun space just for kids at Dreams Tulum.

Mayan-themed Explorer’s Club for children: Entrance to this really cool camp is included for children ages 3 to 12. The camp is open daily, well into the evening so Mom and Dad can enjoy a grown-ups’ meal themselves. The kids’ camp facility is huge, with a playset, climbing wall, water-play area, basketball court, foosball table, video games and tons of arts and crafts. The kids also take “field trips” to build sand castles and play games on the pristine beach.

Oceanfront location, minutes from Tulum: This lovely all-inclusive resort is located right on the beach, and just minutes from the ancient archaeological Mayan ruins that are well worth a visit. When you do plan an excursion, do bring your bathing suits, as you can cool off in the ocean after you tour the ruins — and do try to get there at the start of the day, before the mid-day sun peaks, as there is little shade in the exposed area.

Oceanfront free-form pool at Dreams Tulum.

Lots of spots for kids to swim: There are two pools at Dreams Tulum, one “free form”  (with a bridge kids can swim under, always fun) and one main rectangular pool, with plenty of chaise lounges for relaxation. A separate children’s pool is ideal for Dreams’ youngest guests.

World Cafe buffet-style restaurant at Dreams Tulum.

Buffet dining: I love all-inclusive resorts for family vacations, namely because they typically feature at least one buffet-dining option. It simply makes meals easier, since children can make their own choices, and if they don’t love something they picked, they can select something else to eat! Here, the main buffet is called World Cafe, and offers loads of kid-friendly options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

While Dreams Tulum doesn’t offer family suites especially for adults traveling with kids, there are varying room configurations with double beds, in multiple price ranges — from garden views to “premium junior suite ocean views” with VIP amenities.

Love that the kid’s club takes toddlers and preschoolers. So many only start with kindergartners which is still a good two years away for my family.
