A year ago, when I first overnighted at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Denver Downtown, it had just opened. In a story for the Denver Post, I focused on the nifty partnership it has with Metro State University, as well as some of its highlights, such as included hot buffet breakfast, included wi-fi and a brilliant location a stone’s throw from the shops and restaurants in Denver’s downtown area. Since I visited, the hotel has added a wonderful shuttle service — complimentary, on-demand transportation anywhere within a three-mile radius of the hotel from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (first come, first served) — and the on-site Red Robin Burger Works is up and running for a quick meal.
Last week I returned to experience one of its fun packages offered this year (through January 31, 2014): the Larimer Square Experience Shopping Package. With this sweet deal, you get not only a night’s accommodation in a spacious suite, but also free valet parking (a $28 per night value) and a $50 gift card to spend at any of Larimer Square’s shops or restaurants.
Larimer Square is home to some of Denver’s trendiest boutiques and best restaurants; truly, it’s one of my favorite spots in the city not only to eat and shop, but also just to stroll and people watch. From the SpringHill Suites Denver Downtown, it’s just a 7-minute walk (three blocks or so) to Cru, where I chose to spend my $50 Larimer Square gift certificate.
Pal Jennifer Close, a fellow travel blogger who recently moved to Denver from Florida, met me at Cru for a small meal at this darling food and wine bar. We scored a two-top table on the small patio outside, and chatted up a storm, while enjoying a tasting flight of wine — three 2 oz. pours of wines that are related by grape varietal, region or style. (I do think the pours were generous, closer to 3 oz!) I went for a trio of wines from Spain, and I liked the Muriel Rioja so much, I followed up with a full glass — not realizing it cost $14 a glass, which is as much as I typically spend on a bottle at home! Good thing I had that handy Larimer Square gift certificate from SpringHill Suites…
Apparently, I couldn’t get enough of Larimer Square’s eateries during my two-night stay at the SpringHill Suites Denver Downtown: the following night I met my brother- and sister-in-law at the Mediterranean hotspot Rioja (keeping with that Spanish theme) for yet another salad — this time baby arugula with Medjool dates and gorgonzola — as well as a “picnic” of artisan meats, warm pine nut crusted goat cheese, Italian Mountain gorgonzola (yes, more!), and almonds. The cheese and meat plate was beautifully presented with crisp breads; I highly recommend.
Then, the following day, before scooting out of town, I stopped in The Market at Larimer Square, which is an awesome deli, bakery, salad bar, candy store combo of goodness. I ordered a turkey with sun-dried tomato spread on ciabatta, plus a fresh peanut butter cookie and Snapple lemonade. A tasty to-go meal, for sure!
Another nice package that the SpringHill Suites Denver Downtown is offering this summer is Bikes & Brews, which gives guests two bottles Colorado’s Fat Tire beer per night, plus a gift bag with two New Belgium brewery bottle openers and two bicycle bells. The package also includes two bike-rental day passes with B-cycle, which has stations all over the city — just borrow one at any stand, and return at any stand. Plus, with the Bikes & Brews deal, you get free valet parking, which is huge, since it costs $25 a night at the hotel.
Still more seasonal packages at the SpringHill Suites Denver Downtown tie into its proximity to the Pepsi Center (across the street), where the Denver Nuggets basketball team and Colorado Avalanche hockey team play, as well Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park, also within walking distance. Special lodging deals include tickets to these popular Denver venues.
But, really, I don’t think you need a special package to overnight at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Denver Downtown. I find the roomy suites, included amenities (namely breakfast , wi-fi and downtown transportation), and the friendly front-desk and breakfast-buffet staff reason enough to stay at this reasonably priced, brilliantly located, modern Denver property.
