Gal on the Go: 350 Feet above Ambergris Caye, Belize

For Photo Friday (Friday the 13th, at that!), I figured it would only be appropriate to make my last live on-the-go post from Belize an image from our day’s adventures. And we had a lot of them — spotting a moray eel and green turtle while snorkeling in Hol Chan Marine Reserve and petting sharks and stingrays in Shark Ray Alley, plus parasailing courtesy of Extreme Adventures (the guides couldn’t be more accommodating, fun and entertaining — they were great).

Here’s one from 350 feet above Ambergris Caye on my tandem parasail with Melanie Waldman of Travels with Two. It just makes me grin.

    Aw-SUM
My first thought was that I would have been scared I would drop my camera- but upon further reflection, afraid I might have dropped much more than that…

You are one brave girl! I wouldn’t even think about bring my camera let along taking a picture while doing that. :)

I always thought it would be fun to go parasailing. Looks like a blast!
I always carry a little point-and-shoot camera…so while I might not take my big DSLR up there with me, I’d totally take my Powershot for the trip :)

Okay, Kara, would you recommend this for a person afraid of heights?
I’ve sailed over the Golden Gate in a Zeppelin, soared above Napa Valley vineyards in a hot air balloon and glided over Kauai’s Na Pali coast in a helicopter, but am afraid to zipline or parasail.
P.S. It scares me to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. LOL!

Nancy – If you can do a hot air balloon and helicopter you can for sure do a parasail or zipline. The zipline tour I did at Jungle Paw in Belize was PERFECT for first-timers – short runs not too far off the ground (as opposed to 600-foot stretches over river gorges in Puerto Vallarta). I too do not like heights – but for some reason I can jump out of an airplane (granted, w/ trepidation) and do things like parasail, but I have a hard time climbing to roof of our house when my husband needs me to help him fix something. Perhaps because I’m not roped in or have a parachute?

Looks like fun, Kara. I have a fear of heights too but have no problems when my feet aren’t attached to the ground, like ziplining, hot air ballooning, etc. I’m thinking my “heights” problem is associated with depth perception. I’ve read about virtual reality programs that condition a person to overcome a fear of heights. In any event, enjoyed reading about your experience.
