It’s not uncommon for homeowners to wonder about their house while they’re away. I know do. Fires, flooding and burglaries are common concerns and for good reason. Such unexpected events can be damaging and costly and not the way anyone wants to return from a vacation.
That’s where Logitech Alert 750i Master System comes in. Thanks to Logitech, I’m having fun playing with this surveillance device and I have to say I’m quite impressed. This digital video security system comes with a smart camera and PC software but the best part is travelers can view live video of their home from Internet-connected computers, anywhere in the world – including your hotel room – for free.
Not being a very techy person, I thought I’d be intimidated by the setup process, but it ends up the process is very simple. After downloading the program, the Logitech Alert Commander disc walks you through installation which is only three simple steps: install software, connect to your network and plug in the camera. One note, don’t plan to plug the network adapter into a power strip. I almost did this but read it can interfere with the camera(s).
Once the Master System is set up you can see your home clearly from the computer! It’s that easy. Features include: control and configure your video security system, manage up to six cameras, view live and recorded video in HD resolution, set up motion zones for individual cameras, create and manage e-mail and mobile phone motion alerts, perform Digital Pan, tilt and zoom, back up video stored on your cameras to your PC, manage account and security settings, receive desktop notification of important events.
There are some system requirements for setup and viewing which are pretty basic: Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, 2 GHz or faster processor, high-speed Internet connection. When you’re away from home, viewing requires a PC or Intel-based Mac with Adobe Flash Player 10 or later (free download).
What I love the most, the 750i System automatically records video when motion is detected and the homeowner can receive e-mail alerts by computer or cell phone. This way, you won’t feel the need to constantly be watching your home when you should be relaxing poolside. In addition to the worst case scenarios, there are other reasons to invest in a surveillance system. Pet owners can monitor their cats while away or homeowners can set up their camera to watch for packages on the front patio so they can alert a friend to pick it up.
While the Logitech Alert 750i Master System isn’t cheap (it retails for $299), it is an incredible tool for easing home worries while you travel. If you use a home video security system for your travels, what do you use it for? We’d love to hear your comments.
