I will never forget a flight when I was working as a flight attendant and a passenger approached me asking if we had a lock cutter on board because he wanted to cut his luggage lock off his carry-on suitcase. This was before 9/11, but even then a lock cutter was one tool we didn’t keep in our emergency medial kit. The poor guy had either lost the key to his lock or locked it inside his luggage. He wasn’t sure, but he needed to open his luggage and without the key it wasn’t going to happen. A few other passengers offered their universal luggage key, but none worked.
I remember thinking at the time that it was a good thing he wasn’t in need of medication that could have been locked inside.
There are a number of reasons to keep a lock on your luggage. Just this year, several stories were released about passenger bags being ransacked along their travel route. For example, if your luggage is put on the wrong flight and ends up in another city it could easily be left abandoned on a carousel. Theft isn’t something new, but it’s best to deter any temptation while our luggage is out of our control.
When I heard about WordLock, I thought back to that incident when the man lost his key and thought what a clever idea! Instead of opening with a key or number combination, WordlLock locks use a four-letter combination that is set by the user and it can be reset over and over. WordLock sent me a sample to check out for myself and it’s really easy to use and there are other benefits.
WordLocks are TSA-accepted which means if your luggage is selected for a random search, they won’t cut off your lock .
