First Day on Hawaii’s Big Island

Yesterday was the 90th birthday of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! And – you better believe it – the SoCalGal Family celebrated this incredibly important date by spending it in the very back row of a full United flight to Kona, Hawaii. The back row, famous for its immediate proximity to the coach bathrooms, is also the repository for a small, but pungent, assortment of smells. We really should have gotten to SeatGuru before it was too late, but there you have it.

Late Afternoon at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa on the Big Island

And now, on the Big Island, two of us are thrilled to start a day of exploration and relaxation. The other two (of whom I am one) are pretty tired, since the youngest SoCalKid spent the night fighting a losing battle with some germ she picked up on the plane. She SAYS she’s feeling all better, in between hacking coughs. We’ll see. All I know for sure is, the resort is wonderful, the view off our lanai is perfect, and there’s a chance that half my family might have to spend our first day of our Hawaiian vacation inside. Even Ripley would have a hard time believing that.
