The Most Romantic Resort in Playa Del Carmen: Viceroy Riviera Maya

When I first walked through Viceroy Riviera Maya in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico I was absolutely stunned by the lush, green growth that covered the property. Sidewalks twist and turn through the grounds leading to unobtrusive private villas, a serene pool area and breathtaking ocean views. The jungle and beach combination can easily be described as mysterious and that’s certainly the vibe you’ll get when you visit this Viceroy. The Mayan ambiance and traditions infused into Viceroy’s setting and spa services help explain how this property could easily be the most romantic resort in Playa Del Carmen. Every detail has been intricately planned out which contributes to what can only be described as a special experience.

Here are some of the reasons Viceroy Riviera Maya makes for the ideal romantic retreat…

Mayan Blessing. Upon arrival guests are greeted with a Mayan blessing performed by the Mayan shaman on staffDon’t be surprised when all worries vanish.

Freshly cut soap.  Every guest is offered a selection of soaps which are freshly cut off of a large block. My selection was chocolate, oatmeal and lemon grass (a natural mosquito repellent). You’ll also quickly discover that the Viceroy employees are first-class and will do anything they can to help make your stay enjoyable.

Thatched-palapa roofs. I’ve always wanted to stay in a villa capped with a thatch roof. There’s something about it that taps into the exotic ambiances of Gilligan’s Island or Swiss Family Robinson. Now that I’ve done it, let’s just say I’d do it again. The villas are airy due to the high ceilings and there is a fan hanging from above that keeps the air moving. I should add that each room is air conditioned so if you like to sleep in the cold you can – just remember to keep the doors closed.

Upscale villas. The spacious rooms match the jungle theme but it’s the details that make the accommodations lush. The beds are the kind you sink into, sleep all night long and have a difficult time getting out of in the morning. The sheets are 500-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets and there is a bounty of plush down pillows. While you may feel that you’re isolated, technology is alive and well here. Room amenities include DVD/CD player, flat-panel HD TVs with satellite television, hair dryers, easy-to-use safes, and – you have to love this – complimentary Wi-fi.

Private terrace. All 41 villas in the resort have a romantic private terrace, plunge pool, chaise lounges, hand-carved stone dining table and a gorgeous handmade crochet hammock. Can you think of a better way to spend the day? And this very terrace (in the photo below) also overlooks the resort’s pool and ocean.

Ocean Views. Two villas have direct ocean views.

Outdoor showers. Showering outdoors may seem risqué to some but here it only feels natural. And worry not about someone peeking in on you. Although you could encounter a lizard or tropical birds on occasion.

Oceanside dining. The Coral Grill and Bar makes for a lovely place to spend the morning sipping coffee or later in the evening enjoying dinner while sipping a pineapple margarita. The meals at Viceroy at fresh and full of flavor. There is no reason to eat off property.

Romantic turn downs. If you’re celebrating something special like a honeymoon or anniversary, be sure to pass the news on to the resort. The romantic turn downs are gorgeous.

Candles surround the pool…

The soaking tub is filled…

Candles decorate the guest room, patio and bathroom…

And rose petals are scattered everywhere including  Te Am0 (“I love you” in Spanish) inscribed on the bed – and the “o” is in the shape of a heart…

Romantic beach. Sunrise makes for a perfect time to stroll the quiet beach, but the entire resort setting is made for romance, adventure and connecting. Whatever your desire you’ll find it at Viceroy, the most romantic resort in Riviera Maya. And there’s a very good chance you will want to return again and again. I know I do.

Thank you Viceroy for inviting me to experience your beautiful property.

Oh my goodness! Reading through this post made me want to jet off to Mexico (we have never been). That definitely looks like our kind of vacation. We love staying in Beachfront Suites when we go to Jamaica so I imagine we would fall in love with this resort too.

Love the outdoor shower idea and lemongrass anything is our favorite! Good choice!
