For years I’ve been crazy about luggage. But my biggest issue has been trying to find a decent laptop carry-on bag. I’ve struggled with various makes and models and have encountered the same problem with each bag or backpack – the ones I’ve been using just aren’t roomy enough.
However, all of that changed when I received my Brain Bag from Tom Bihn — the official luggage of The Vacation Gals. When my family traveled to Orlando last month I had the opportunity to test this backpack. The Brain Bag and my Tom Bihn Imago messenger bag (used as my purse) were our only carry-on items. And they worked out perfectly. Here are the reasons I haven’t been able to stop raving about this work-of-art laptop bag.
1. Plenty of storage options. When I travel I like to have a space for everything: my makeup, cell phone, kids’ stuff, itinerary and the Brain Bag has it. There is a total of six spaces: two main compartments and four external pockets (perfect for phone, keys, crayons, snacks, 
etc.). There is even a mesh pocket which we found to be a perfect place to stash our boarding passes. My most useful compartment was the attachable Snake Charmer (can be purchased separately; see photo at right) which held all of our electronic chargers.
2. Optional removable laptop cases. Tom Bihn calls their laptop cases a Brain Cell (clever, huh?) and they come in either a horizontal or vertical options which are designed for your specific laptop model. The vertical is perfect for the Brain Bag, because all you do at airport security is unzip the top and slide out the laptop. These cases do more than just offer a convenient space for you to stow your computer — they protect it (even passed an egg-drop test). And the fact that the Brain Cell is optional is perfect for those non-laptop needed trips.
3. Roomy. Let me warn you, this bag has so much space it is extremely easy to over pack. Our bag ended up so heavy that my husband had to carry it through the airport. But, we were able to bring everything we needed on board — and them some. Not only did I have my computer and charger packed, I also had 
a stack of coloring books, reading books, two Leapster video games, toys, my makeup bag, cell phone, camera, video recorder, chargers for all electronics (as mentioned above), a bag of trail mix, four lollipops, folder overflowing with our itinerary information, two Disney character autograph books, pens and a shot glasses and magnets we picked up in the airport gift shop.
4. Quality. If I’ve learned one thing as an adult, it’s not to skimp when it comes to quality and Tom Bihn produces just that (and that’s what keeps customers returning). Sturdy, durable and tough is just what you need for travel.
5. Water resistant. The Brain Bag fabrics are coated on the interior with urethane for water resistance and the outside is treated with a water-repellent finish. When we were in Orlando we encountered more than our share of rain. While I wasn’t dancing in the rain with the Brain Bag, I was at Disney World with my Imago bag. I knew something fabulous was up when our bodies were drenched at the Magic Kingdom and everything inside the bag stayed dry — I was honestly shocked.
6. My bags match. This is purely based off appearance, but I love that the Brain Bag matches my Imago. I opted for the olive, but there are various color choices to choose from.
7. Our military can use them. Tom Bihn is so cool, they made a few alterations to the bag and produced it in a 1000 denier Cordura Universal Camouflage version for military personnel. The Brain Bag would make a great gift for the military man or woman in your life. After all, you can’t beat a laptop backpack that has everything you need in a carry on.
Very interesting. After my last trip to a snowy place, I’ve decided that a waterproof (or at least water resistant!) backpack is in my future…
