According to (most of) my friends’ Facebook pages and Instagram accounts, they have some pretty perfect family vacations. And I fully admit I typically only share the best of the best of my pictures here on the blog and on my social media accounts. (I don’t think there are any shots of me with triple chins anywhere on the Internet. If there are, let me know.) We moms generally tell vacation tales of exciting outdoor adventures, yummy family restaurant dinners, magical hotel stays, and sublime pool relaxation.
But let’s be honest, shall we?
Family travel ain’t always pretty.
There are (many) times my family got horribly lost in an unfamiliar city. When kids have cried uncontrollably on airplanes. When the budget hotel I booked was so utterly horrible (dirty, hot), we moved out the next day. When flat tires, delayed planes, closed restaurants, and emergency room visits have marred family trips.
But that’s all part and parcel of the chaos that typically accompanies family travel.
Sometimes family travel can be (amusingly) frustrating. Vacation Gal Beth Blair shares that just this year her tween-age son racked up $75 in arcade expenditures via his cruise stateroom key. Sometimes family travel can be a bit scary — like when Jen Miner’s preschool-age daughter swallowed a coin on a vacation in Puerto Rico (she was just fine, after a visit to the ER). And sometimes the stories are simply icksville — like the time my son, age 7, puked in the pool at The Broadmoor, a super-luxe resort hotel. (We skulked outta there when the lifeguard blew the whistle to clear the area).
Frankly, I think these stories of mishaps make the best stories! These are the bloopers that will go down in family lore. To wit, my son’s pool puke story comes up in dinner conversation at least annually.
