Do you love boutique hotels as much as I do? The uniqueness, the charm, the nothing-like-it vibe that many of these privately owned hotels possess add a fun ambiance to your travels. My family just returned from a 17-day trip and one of our stops was Moonrise Hotel in St. Louis. It is one of many cool boutique hotels offered by booking site IBC Hotels. Located in the Delmar Loop District, the area has a retro theme. For example, Moonrise has a candy shop and Pin Up Bowl (bowling) as neighbors. While within walking distance is Forest Park where you will find the Art Museum, History Museum, Science Center, Zoo, Muny Opera as well as all of the other year-round events held at this popular attraction.
Moonrise Hotel itself is fun to stay at. Think swanky, hip, fun. I could describe this property in a thousand more words because it is that fabulous. You might tell by the name that the theme has something to do with the moon and does it ever. Moons are everywhere: the lobby, guest rooms, halls, restaurants and bars. See the moon on top of the building in the photo above? The rooftop terrace has that for a view and as for the Eclipse Restaurant and Bar. We enjoyed Eclipse Restaurant and the friendly service.
Let me break down our out-of-this-world experience:
1. Ideal guest rooms. Since we were traveling with our kids we stayed in a two queen bedroom. The Walk of Fame Suites are supposedly really cool as they feature St. Louis celebrities. The beds were ahhh-mazingly comfortable beds had a lovely variety of moon-themed wall decor. The rooms were also spacious, had a bar area, and the hotel offers free wi-fi!
What my kids really loved, the extra toilet paper was adorned with colorful stickers and the sink stopper had pop art! Fun, fun stuff.
2. Space-themed memorabilia. Glass cases, a couple on the way to the elevators, another in the Eclipse Restaurant (perhaps more that I missed), have displays of fun space themed items – see the NASA Barbie? Betty Boop also makes an appearance. You will also spy Buzz Light Year a couple of times as well as what look to be official NASA patches. Take a peek.
Check out this awesome chess set. I wish I could show you more of the hotel’s collection but I guess you will have to see for yourself instead.
3. Instagram-worthy lobby. This is the most vibrant lobby I have ever seen. The first thing you notice when you walk into the lobby – especially if at night – is the colorful staircase leading to the second level. Look up, and it’s a Dale Chihuly chandelier. Look further on for a wall of moon phases and swanky furniture on a sleek, colorful rug. The person behind this design scheme has some fun and fabulous talent and taste. You can see why the kids voted this their “favorite hotel ever” while Jeff and I agreed it’s now our St. Louis go-to hotel.
I booked my stay compliments of IBC Hotels. The InnDependent Boutique Collection (IBC app) helps travelers find unique, independently-owned boutique hotels. If you want more local flavor from your travels, independent hotels like the Moonrise Hotel are the way to go. See you next time, Moonrise!
