While we love to travel, there is something pleasant about sleeping in your own bed. As someone one said, there’s no place like home (insert clicking ruby red slippers). What’s best though, in my opinion, is bringing our travels home with us. In recent years we’ve shared Map Your Travels, a beautiful way to track your past and future travels, something that is fun for entire family. We’ve also talked about wall maps and map-themed wallpaper. The other day I was excited to show you how to turn your Instagram photos into high quality home decor without a steep price. Today I have another fun way to turn your Instagram photos into home decor, some fun accent piece ideas, and tips from other travelers on how they bring their travels into their own homes. Without further ado, here are tips for travel themed home decor:
Personalized Coasters. Did you know CVS Pharmacy has a photo department and they offer more than prints? In fact, CVS does a gorgeous job at turning your photos, including your Instagram shots, into 4″x4″ cork back coasters. Talk about a fun conversation starter. I ordered a set for my husband for Father’s Day but they turned out so nice I couldn’t wait to give them to him. He thought it was the coolest gift ever. The process is simple. Download your image, edit to your liking, then order and pay online. What’s really great, the cost is affordable. A set of four coasters is only $19.99.
Meaningful Photos. “My wife and I decorate using photos we’ve taken on our travels. For example, over our TV are photos from Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris—three cities we visited on our honeymoon. Sure, we could find photos that looked a little better, but they wouldn’t have as much meaning,” says writer and editor Zach Everson.
Furniture. “I’m constantly reminded of my trip to Paris thanks to the collection of antique French furniture I’ve acquired during my travels to furnish my home,” says Jessica Greenwalt Founder of Pixelkeet and Co-Founder of CrowdMed. “You can decide to commit to this theme long after you’ve returned home. Thanks to the internet, it is possible to find themed pieces from around the world and have them delivered to your doorstep. I’ve also personally had a lot of luck finding pieces on Craigslist, at antique fairs, and at
antique shops around the country.”
Travel Themed Accent Pieces. These Surya Decorative Pillows ($38) (see above) from BeyondStores.com have quickly become some of my favorite travel-themed accents and apparently my kids’ too because I keep finding the huge pillows on their beds or in the playroom teepee insteamd of the couch and chair where I placed them. The Surya Decorative Pillow is easily an ideal travel-themed accent because it is lined with bucket list worthy cities from around the world. As my daughter put it, “I need to go to every one of these places.” I couldn’t agree more.
Collections: “Since I was about 14 or 15 years old I have been collecting masks from all over the world,” says Kiki of Wanderlust Explorers. “I think it is a unique way to bring our travels into the home. Every culture on earth it seems have their own mask. Currently I have masks from China, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and a few places in Africa. Really beautiful the diversity that can be created on a wall with masks of differing sizes, shapes, colors and textures.”
Family Inspiration Board. Message boards are popular these days with the hopes of keeping families organized but have you ever thought about turning these pieces into travel inspiration? We’re using our Sterling Industries Message Board ($78) as a countdown to vacation board along with displaying some of our favorite travel photos. Everytime we walk out our mudroom door we’re reminded that fun times are ahead plus it’s really nice never losing my keys because they always have a place!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this piece as well as the brands who sent me travel-themed products to review.
