Travel Rants – The Malcontent Travel Educator Blog

Travel Rants is a great blog, and the name tells you (almost) everything you need to know. There are a lot of travel sites out there in the big wide internet that are unrelentingly positive, wearing rose-colored glasses and assuming that all things related to travel are covered in rainbows and unicorns. Travel Rants cuts through all that and tells us what any experienced traveler knows; sometimes, travel is hard. Airport security is a pain, hotels can be lousy or at least not have the accommodations promised on their websites, and…well, there’s not much you can do about bad weather, but it affects a vacation nonetheless. We are big fans of Travel Rants’ Darren Cronian for his honesty and integrity.

Now, Darren recently ran the “Travel Rants Consumer Awards” contest, and we won Best Travel Blog! Very exciting, and we are proud to be in the company of Kayak (Best Travel Comparison Site), The New York Times (Best Newspaper Travel Portal) and Trip Advisor (Best Trip Planning Site), among others.

That’s full disclosure. However, there is much to value on Travel Rants besides the rare (perhaps to be annual?) awards post. Past posts include “Five Things I Hate About Airports,” which is a rant of the highest form, and felt almost as good to read as it probably did to write. Another post I especially like is “Five Popular Travel Consumer Complaints for 2008.” Lost luggage is there, as you might expect, but so is the complaint of airlines taking advantage of human error. Spot on!

Travel Rants is a UK-based blog, so the travel destinations category is noticeably sparse in terms of USA vacation locales. Chock full of European destinations, though! Besides, when I read this blog, I read it for the clear-eyed posts regarding the vagaries of travel. And I wouldn’t change a thing.
