TravelSmart Mobile App from Allianz Global Assistance

While I’m happy to say that the bulk of my family’s trips have largely been incident-free, I can recall plenty of instances over the years, where we’ve wandered into foreign pharmacies, having to find some sort of ointment or pill or syrup to help with some unexpected ailment, from croupy coughs to bee stings.

TravelSmart mobile app

That’s when the new TravelSmart Mobile App from Allianz Global Assistance would have come in handy with its features to help users stay safe while traveling around the world.

Here’s the scoop on some of the key features on the iPhone app (fewer features are found on the Android, but the full array is coming soon for Droid users):

TravelSmart Mobile AppFirst Aid Translator: I think this is one of my favorite features; as I noted, it’s one that I’d likely most often use in pharmacies or doctors’ offices in foreign countries.

Search for a common first-aid term — from “allergy” to “kidney pain” to “urinary infection” — and then select one of more than a dozen languages to have the word or phrase instantly translated.

This is an easy way to quickly communicate medical issues; in countries such as Japan or Russia, one could simply show the characters or Cyrillic spelling on your phone’s screen to the medical professional from whom you need help.

Medication Dictionary: Similarly, you can search the app’s list of common medications, and it will provide the international term for your drug so you could easily replace the medication if, say, you run out of it unexpectedly on vacation.

Snap a photo of your medicine’s packaging to store in the app to have on hand to show pharmacists in foreign countries.

With this feature you can also type in any notes you might want to have at your fingertips about any drugs you regularly take.

Country Information: 911 may be the emergency number to call in the United States, but in Serbia it’s 092, in Turkey it’s 155, and in Denmark it’s 112.

All of these numbers are now available easily through the TravelSmart Mobile app in its Country Information section. You’ll also find a link to each country’s entry on Wikipedia for oodles of information about the region you’re visiting. Note that since Wikipedia is an online resource, this feature only works with Wi-Fi or cellular data.

The TravelSmart Mobile App from Allianz has a medication dictionary, flight status updates, country emergency numbers, hospital finder and more.International Hospital Search: The TravelSmart Mobile app has a list of Allianz Global Assistance reviewed medical facilities in countries worldwide. With a click of a button you can get driving directions or call the hospital directly.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of hospitals in every city in every country in the world; rather it’s a list of those that have been pre-screened by the travel-insurance company.

Flight Status: Enter your flight details (within a 3-day window) to keep apprised of any delays with upcoming flights.

Policy Information: If you are a travel insurance policy holder with Allianz Global Assistance, all of your policy information can be stored in the app, for easy access.

TravelSmart Hotline: This is fast access to key phone numbers for Allianz customer service or medical assistance — within the United States or abroad.

Rest assured, if you have an Allianz travel insurance policy, you’ll be able to get in touch with someone at the company quickly and easily.
