Where Are You Going for Spring Break?

Last year my family of four plus Grandma spent 9 glorious days on Kauai during my kids’ March school vacation. We found the island wonderfully manageable and we enjoyed gorgeous beaches with calm waves for young children. Kauai is delightfully easy to navigate (just one main road skirting the coast), laid back and low key.

On Kauai, the kids learned to boogie board and sampled snorkeling; we ate way too much shave ice; and we all went on this awesome jungle trek, where I watched my fearless, then-six-year-old hurl herself off a cliff on a rope swing at least 25 feet above the water below. (Heart in my throat until she surfaced safely.) We’d go back for more Hawaii adventures in a heartbeat.

However, that’s not happening this spring break. We’re going a bit more budget conscious in 2008, using frequent flyer miles (thanks, Mom!) to fly to California and spend time at Grammie’s home in Palm Desert. Vacationing at her country-club home is like a five-star resort: pool and hot tub outside the living room, multiple bedrooms (no kids in the hotel double bed next to Mom and Dad), and a fitness center and spa just a short walk away from home base. Yummy, healthy food is plentiful and the babysitting services are first rate!

Plus, there’s loads for kids to do in the Palm Springs area, so we’ll likely go back to visit some favorite haunts, like the Living Desert and the Children’s Museum.

That said, we’re also planning a mini-road trip from Palm Desert to Carlsbad for a repeat of our November 2006 visit to Legoland. Then, my children had a ball on the interactive rides that they could run all by themselves, namely the cars on the Volvo “racetrack.” My son is thrilled this year to be more than 48 inches tall so he can operate even more rides without Mom or Dad in the passenger seat.

For those of you who haven’t made plans yet, check out this series of articles I wrote at Suite101.com about different family spring break vacation destinations in California and Florida (alternatives to Disney), Virginia and Texas.

For folks who have booked your trips, where are you heading?
