You’ve likely heard about the stunt that artist and photographer Richard Prince pulled. He printed Instagram photos – belonging to others – and placed a $90,000 price tag on them. We won’t get into the ethics of the story here, but what I can tell you is this…your personal Instagram photos can be turned into home art without such a hefty price tag. In fact, the piece that I have sitting over my mantel in the photo above, do you see the the picture with the sunset and palm tree silhouettes? I took that photo and posted it on Instagram 45 weeks ago and now it is sitting on my mantel. The cost: $100.
The image was taken last summer while my family was having dinner at Latitudes on Sunset Key, the private resort island located 500 yards off Key West. This shot is one of the most treasured travel photos my family has because it carries such wonderful memories. This winter my family moved into a new house and all of our former home decor had to go because the style of the new home is unique and much different than what we previously owned. With that said, I’ve been on a search to find ways to capture our family memories and uniquely bring them into our home.
This is where the website White Wall Lab comes in. All you have to do it choose that one special image – it doesn’t have to be from Instagram, it can be any photo – select a display format, download your image, and ta-da! Your Instagram photo is turn it into a gorgeous piece of art for the home. I ordered this: Direct print behind acrylic glass; Image dimensions: 20″ x 20″.
Yes, it has a wow-factor and feels like the quality work that it is. Best of all, it’s personal. White Wall Lab offers about 1,000 unique variations to help turn traveler’s memories into cherished works of art. Of course, you’re not limited to travel photos. Baby, weddings, family, scenery, or anything else you would like displayed can be turned into home art. The entire experience is a breeze. The hardest part, for me, was choosing a photo, but I kept coming around to this image because: 1. It’s very difficult to find picture frames for Instagram photos. 2. This was our first trip with our entire family since our little Maisie arrived. 3. I LOVE this photo. It embodies all that vacation is to my family. 4. It would look great in our living room.
I am beyond thrilled with the way it turned out and my husband was quite impressed, too. “How did you do this?” he asked when he came home to our newly appointed mantel that is now called our “Key West mantel” (The yellow framed photo of Jeff and I was taken on the Sunset Key ferry). I told him it was the easiest thing I’ve ever created online. As you can see our home has a double-sided fireplace so I’ll likely order another one for the other side. I urge you to browse the site and play around with your personal pictures – especially your Instagram shots. When you do, please let me know what you think.
Thank you to White Wall Lab for the discount code so I could try your service. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
