Becoming a sports mom/parent happens gradually. First it’s the preschool age where the coaches look like they are herding cats rather than actually coaching a sports team. But that doesn’t last long. Childhood goes fast and so does the playing-for-fun mentality. As the years go by, uniforms become better quality and the tension in the stands thicken as we cheer on our child’s team. Before you know it your child is competing to play on a traveling or school sports team and then they’re playing for the championship. I know. My kids are in sports. We’ve covered the gamut, too. At one point or another we’ve covered hockey, soccer, tennis, swimming, track, basketball, and a Minnesota Twins baseball camp thrown in there, too. Not to mention, all of the other activities that go along with childhood like scouts, dance, art classes, LEGO club, and safety camp.
While life is fun it’s also non-stop as the kids’ activities ebb and flow depending upon the season. The other day I wrote about healthy road trip options for the #PFJTravelWell campaign at Pilot and Flying J Travel Centers and a big thing I realized about our local Pilot store in Inver Grove Heights, besides the cleanliness factor and friendly staff, is there are a bundle of fabulous healthy snack ideas for the hockey or soccer mom (or any type of sports parent) can rely on during those crazy carpooling-to-sports days or weekends on the road to the out-of-town game.
Currently, we’re in the midst of fall basketball season and my husband is coaching. Needless to say, we’ve been eating on-the-go quite a bit. With this in mind we’ve stopped by our local Pilot several times to stock up on drinks and snacks.
Upon entering the store for the first time, my son instantly ran to the ice-cold Gatorade display. He was in drink heaven. While we prefer to push the water, sometimes we give in and let the kids opt for Gatorade. Let’s just say he was thrilled with the abundance of flavors and picked out a couple (yes, we stocked up on water, too). In the meantime, my daughter tracked down the huge selection of Cliff bars, but then we realized there was also an entire section of bar options. We’re talking protein and energy bars. Kids aside, if you were on the way to a road race this would be a great place to stop for some quick energy. Obviously, Pilot is great for parents, too.
Bonus: Pilot Travel Centers have a free app so you can find the location closest to you!
As for after school/before sports snacks all of the items I mentioned in my healthy road trip post are also ideal for sports snacks: fresh salads, sandwiches, fruit and hardboiled eggs are hard to beat and they are healthy choices. Think not-fried or packaged months or years ago. It makes me feel better that I can stop and pick up something fresh, healthy, and affordable. After all, supporting our kids in the world of healthy activities should also mean fueling them with healthy eating options and lucky for us Pilot and Flying J Travel Centers are putting the “healthy” in convenience and I for one am grateful for that!
