It’s not always sunshine and rainbows for us over here at The Vacation Gals. In the first six weeks of 2011 we’ve dealt with crippling snowstorms, sick kids, time-consuming dental work, a leaky roof, a fender bender and a pulled back muscle. So when something totally awesome happens to us collectively we sure like to celebrate and share the news — hope you don’t mind!
We’re finalists once again in the annual Weblog Awards, also known as the Bloggies, for Best Travel Blog. And once again we’re amid some pretty fabulous company: four of our professional friends are also finalists. It’s an honor to be listed among them.
What’s fun is that we’ve gotten to know these fellow bloggers over the past couple years. Gary of Everything Everywhere and Kristin of Camels & Chocolate were also finalists in 2010, and we met Donna of My Itchy Travel Feet and Barbara of Hole in the Donut in person at TBEX in New York last year. We’ve also Stumbled these bloggers’ posts, re-Tweeted their Tweets or “liked” their Facebook pages. These are good people!
Of course we five barely scratch the surface of the travel blogosphere — from family travel and destination-specific coverage to round-the-world trips and backpacking tips, oh, there are hundreds of travel blogs out there. Need travel inspiration or more travel blogs in your feed reader? Check out these sources:
- Best Family Travel Advice: Contributors here are some of the most widely read family-travel writers on the web. (Disclosure: SoCalGal Jen is one of the site’s founders.)
- Travel Blog Sites: Travel blogs are ranked according to average Alexa and Compete measurements. It’s a flawed system – for one, Compete traffic stats are hardly accurate; still, it’s always fun to see The Vacation Gals ranked in the top 20. This week we’re at #12!
- Brendan Van Son’s Top 100 Independent Travel Websites: This travel blogger uses Alexa rankings, his own subjective content judging and an intricate scoring system to rank blogs every week. This week we’re #42.
- Top 50 Online Travel Influencers (Independent): Compiled by the Influencers in Travel website, these folks are listed based on Klout scores; most of them have travel blogs. TwinCitiesGal Beth and I were on the list for a while, but alas, our Klout scores dipped to below 62.5 and we fell off recently.
We hope you’ll scoot over to the Bloggies website and vote for your favorite travel blog. It’s a simple process — no password registration necessary (you just need to enter an email to receive a confirmation link to click). Voting ends at 10 p.m. (EST), Sunday, February 20.
