The wind was whipping my daughter Madeline’s hair behind her as she snapped a photo out the window of our family car. Our youngest was sound asleep in her carseat while our oldest Jeb looked outside, nodding his head to the beat of the music coming from his earbuds. This time we were on an Iowa road trip to Fort Dodge and Iowa Falls. Adventures on the road are a fun way for my family to slowdown, enjoy some quality time together while seeking fun, scenic, unusual, quirky or historical things without a big drawn-out plan. The joy is in the journey, as they say, and that’s why my clan loves road trips to much. Plus, we usually have a good story to tell.
This month we’ve discovered the joy of staying with the AmericaInn hotel chain, a first for us. And we have been pleasantly surprised. We still have three more nights on the road but this is what we like so far:
Friendly staff. Staying in three different AmericInn hotels has meant at least three welcoming, smiling faces upon our arrival. The “let me know if I can help with anything” attitude has been consistent. We have been pointed to great restaurants, fun attractions, spot-on directions, and even offered hot cookies upon arrival.
Location, location, location. AmericInn, best known as a Midwest hotel chain, is found in both large cities as well as small towns and most often are considered the best choice being “upscale local”. I love that description because it’s true. As someone who has traveled coast to coast many times I have seen the gamut of hotel lodging options in small towns. I suggest that if you come across an AmericInn on your road trip – go for it. You won’t be sorry. Most properties are within a half-day drive of another, including Iowa, so road tripping is made easy.
Beds. A few weeks ago my family stayed in the brand new AmericInn property (five months old) in Sibley, Iowa and it was a dream. Knowing we were going to be staying in other properties later on I wondered if we were getting spoiled because the beds were so comfortable. I can now say that AmericInn takes their beds seriously. Every property has offered comfortable beds. Yay for a good night’s sleep!
Pool. The free hotel-side internet and Easy Rewards loyalty program are great perks but the huge ready-to-swim pool space with big windows, complete with towels were the big hit with my kids – especially my tweens.
Breakfast. What has been really great about our AmericInn experience is having the hot breakfast ready as soon as my toddler and I woke up before the rest of the family. We got dressed and zipped down to the breakfast area so I could enjoy a cup of hot coffee while my toddler indulged in whatever she was in the mood for that day – fresh fruit, cereal, freshly baked waffles, yogurt, granola bars, eggs and sausage…and the list goes on. It was nice not having to wait for the family to wake to eat and have the option for bringing the meal to our room or suite.
